ABSTRACT
Today laparoscopy has become the standard management modality in many gynecologic pathologies that require surgery. Many studies, in the literature, revealed improved surgical outcomes when compared to open procedures. Recently, the progress in technology and the increase in number of patients, caused an increased interest in this field. Single incision laparoscopic surgery is a novel, advancing technique, in minimally invasive surgery. Although recent data in the general surgery, urology, and gynecology have demonstrated preliminary feasibility, safety and effectiveness of this technique in the treatment of various conditions, many questions must be answered and its benefits over conventional laparoscopy have to be shown before it becomes more generalizable. The true indicator for its widespread acceptance will be whether or not the technique demonstrates reduced pain, reduced perioperative morbidity, similar safety and improved cosmetic outcomes when compared to conventional laparoscopy. Prospective studies in large cohorts are needed to display these results and to validate this new technique.
