ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVES:
We aimed to compare oral Nifedipine with Magnesium Sulphate to cease preterm labor and with Terbutalin for preventing recurrent preterm labor, with respect to the efficacy and adverse effects.
Setting:
Ağrı Maternity and Children Hospital, Ağrı
MATERIAL-METHODS:
İn this study, the woman with singleton pregnancies at 20-36 weeks were randomized and given Nifedipine and Magnesium Sulphate, consecutively. After cessation of the labor, the patients in Nifedipine group were treated with oral Nifedipine and the patients in Magnesium sulphate group were treated with oral Terbutaline until the 36th gestational week,if delivery did not occur.
RESULTS:
İn our study, out of 77 patients 39 were given Nifedipine and 38 were given Magnesium Sulphate randomly. The two groups were compared according to the parameters such as cervical dilatation, contraction frequency and gestational weeks.Consequencely, both protocols were found equally effectivein ceasing the labor and preventing recurrent preterm labor. Both study groups showed similar incidence of adverse affects.
DISCUSSION:
In conclusion, both of the treatment protocols ceased preterm labor and prevented recurrent preterm labor with similar efficacy.
