OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of sublingual, vaginal and oral misoprostol administrations in termination of second trimester pregnancies. Design: A prospective randomized trial. Setting: SSK Ankara Maternity Hospital. Patients: Ninety patients with second trimester pregnancy requiring termination due to fetal or maternal causes. Interventions: The patients were administered sublingual (n=30), vaginal (n=30) and oral misoprostol (n=30). Main outcome measures: Rate of pregnancy termination, time between induction and abortion, rate of hemoglobin decline, rate of complete abortion. RESULTS: The rates of success in 24 hours were 100% (n=30) in sublingual group, 86.7% (n=26) in vaginal group and 83.3% (n=25) in oral group (p=0.07). The respective figures in 48 hours were 100% (n=30), 96.6% (n=29) and 90.0% (n=27) (p>0.05). The times between induction and abortion were 491.2±177.3 minutes (range 130-930 minutes) in sublingual group, 702.6±368.8 minutes (range 195-1670 minutes) in vaginal group and 719.8±209.9 minutes (range 405-1140 minutes) in oral group. The sublingual group had shorter induction-abortion time when compared to those of vaginal and oral groups (p pregnancies when compared to vaginal and oral misoprostol administration.
